We never thought our son would take a shower daily, help with chores, go out for lunch, or go to the library and look at magazines. But since living in the C.H.A.M.P. Program he has done all these things and more. We hope other parents have the opportunity to see their child experience this type of recovery.

It began with a question.

Can You Help?

Father Edward Hajduk, a parish priest at Sacred Heart Church in Lyndhurst, NJ, was having increasing difficulty counseling his parishioners on some of the substance abuse issues they were bringing to him. It was the late 60's, and the world was changing; so was the world of mental health.

Father Hajduk asked the Junior Women's Club of Lyndhurst if they would take on a service project to survey the increasing needs of the community. President Eileen Becker enthusiastically agreed. The Junior Women's Club began their work and soon found themselves in the office of the County Mental Health Director who suggested they start a Community Mental Health Center.  Soon after, a meeting of concerned citizens, social workers and clinicians was held in the living room of Ronald Cannella of Lyndhurst, to make plans for a mental health center in southern Bergen County.

In 1969 the South Bergen Mental Health Center was born; many members of the Lyndhurst Junior Women's club were on the original Board of Trustees. To this day Mrs. Becker and her family remain dedicated supporters of the Agency.

It was a sign of the times.

In the mid- to late-60's, the move towards "community care" and "deinstitutionalization" led to dramatic declines in the length of hospital stays for the mentally ill and the discharge of many patients from custodial care in hospitals. Despite the advent of new psychiatric medications and therapies, the community and families were not always prepared.

Since 1969 South Bergen Mental Health Center has become Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare, and has expanded to three outpatient and partial care service locations in Hackensack, Lyndhurst and River Edge. We have residential facilities in Morris Plains, Emerson, Hackensack, Kearny, Lyndhurst, Rutherford and Fairview, providing beds for nearly 200 people every night.

We provide compassionate and professional services to nearly 4000 children, adults and seniors every year, making us the premier mental health provider in Northern New Jersey.
