History of the Agency
In 1969 the Junior Women's Club of Lyndhurst was asked by a parish priest, concerned by increasing drug use in the area, if they would take on a service project to survey the needs of the community. The Junior Women's Club began their work as part of their Community Improvement Project outreach, and soon found themselves in the office of the County Mental Health Director who suggested they start a Community Mental Health Center. Soon after, a meeting of concerned citizens, social workers and clinicians was held to make plans for a mental health center in southern Bergen County.
The South Bergen Mental Health Center was born; many members of the Lyndhurst Junior Women's Club were on the original Board of Trustees. Since 1969 South Bergen Mental Health Center has become Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. and has expanded to three outpatient and partial care service locations in Hackensack, Lyndhurst and River Edge. We have residential facilities in Morris Plains, Emerson, Hackensack, Kearny, Lyndhurst, Rutherford and Fairview, providing beds for nearly 200 people every night.
Today CBHCare provides compassionate and professional services to nearly 4000 children, adults and seniors every year, making us the premier mental health provider in Northern New Jersey. As in years past, every dollar raised goes toward providing the best behavioral health programs and services to Bergen County's most fragile citizens.
The CBHCare Foundation was established in 2001 to support the mission of Comprehensive Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. (CBHCare). Every dollar raised by the CBHCare Foundation goes to support the programs and services provided to the community by CBHCare.
Board President, Helen Kuruc, is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Essex County College and a resident of Garfield, NJ; Board Treasurer, Denise Krieg, is a nursery school aide and resides in Oradell, NJ; Board Trustee, Evelyn Pezzolla, was a founding Member of the agency and is office manager of Frank's Pontiac GMC and a resident of Lyndhurst.
Founded in 1969 in response to the critical need for counseling services in the community, CBHCare is a private, not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing the highest quality behavioral healthcare services to the people of New Jersey. Over the past 40 years, CBHCare has expanded its services to all ages - from children to seniors.
With treatment centers in Lyndhurst, Hackensack and River Edge, CBHCare offers quality mental health services including individual and family counseling; rehabilitation; alcohol and substance abuse treatment; the Valley Brook Center for Geriatric Partial Care; residential, and preventive services - making CBHCare one of the most vital and important healthcare resources in northern New Jersey.
